The Archives of Economic Life in India

The archives of economic history in India are scattered and one often has to go scouting in search of some material. The material in the archives of Reserve Bank of India, at Calcutta and the National Archives are in good condition. But other archives such as those of financial records in the early nineteenth century in Bombay State Archives were extremely brittle and almost crumbled in my hands. Some discussions on the economic policies of the legislative debates may be found in the Parliament Library of India which has both the Legislative Debates of India as well as the State Legislative Debates. I have also found it useful to look through the South Asian Digital Library, the West Bengal Pubic Library which has digitized many useful statistical texts and rare books. I have further found in microfilms and in printed files many of the papers of the institutional organizations like the Indian Merchant’s Chamber of Bombay archived in the private collection of Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.
