Lijun Zhang is pursuing an MPhil in World History at Fitzwilliam College under the supervision of Dr Rachel Leow. She obtained her BA in history and philosophy at Colgate University. Her undergraduate thesis examined prostitution policing in colonial Singapore between 1936 and 1963. Her MPhil study is funded by the Hong Leong-Lee Kuan Yew Masters Scholarship.
For her MPhil dissertation, Lijun will expand on her undergraduate thesis and offer a comparative analysis of prostitution policing in Singapore, Malaya and Hong Kong from the 1930s to 1950s. In particular, she intends to focus on the public discourses on prostitution within the Chinese communities and the experiences of the Chinese population who were directly affected by the regulatory policies in these British colonies.
