Bibliographical Note
Platonic
and Socratic reception have always been popular themes, and several discussions
have recently appeared in English. A.T. Peperzak, Platonic Transformations:
with and after Hegel, Heidegger, and Levinas (Rowman and Littlefield, 1997),
and C.H. Zuckert, Postmodern Platos: Nietzsche, Heidegger, Gadamer, Strauss,
Derrida (University of Chicago Press, 1996) discuss their respective casts
of characters in perceptive and helpful terms. See also the older and more compendious
discussion in F. Novotný, The Posthumous Life of Plato (Academia
Prague, 1977), with much interesting material on Eastern Europe and the then
Soviet Union. S. Kofman, Socrates: Fictions of a Philosopher, trans.
C. Porter (Athlone, 1998) and A. Nehamas, The Art of Living: Socratic Reflections
from Plato to Foucault, do similar jobs for Socrates, covering respectively
Hegel, Nietzsche, and Kierkegaard, and Montaigne, Nietzsche, and Foucault, while
J.W.Hulse, The Reputations of Socrates: The Afterlife of a Gadfly (Peter
Lang, 1995), provides a helpful survey of a wide swathe of material. (A number
of studies of particular aspects of the reception of Plato or Socrates, as well
as the broader issues of reception of Hellenism, have also been made, many of
which are cited below or in the bibliography).
The books by Hulse and Novotný are catalogues; those of Kofman, Peperzak, and Zuckert provide very good discussions of the particular thinkers treated but without any wider context or comparison with other readings of Plato and Socrates; that of Nehamas is the most philosophically ambitious and suggestive, with much incidental information on wider contexts. The three essays in interpretation offered in this book differ from all of these in treating a sample of modern readings of Plato in terms of their modernity, combining a wide scope with historical argument. They come closest to the discussion in V. Goldschmidt, Platonisme et pensée contemporaine (Aubier Montaigne, 1970), on the 'political critique' and the 'philosophical critique' of Plato (the subjects here of Chapters 3 and 4). One further book should be mentioned, which has provided much guidance: the essays collected in A. Baldwin and S. Hutton (eds.) Platonism in the English Imagination (Cambridge, 1994).
