King's College, Cambridge and the Harvard University Faculty of Arts and Sciences are pleased to announce that they have established a Joint Centre for History and Economics, to facilitate interdisciplinary research and education in the social sciences and the humanities. The Centre for History and Economics was established at King’s College in 1991. With the creation of the counterpart Center at Harvard, the two institutions will have the opportunity to undertake substantial research projects, and to organize workshops, seminars and exchanges of faculty and graduate students. The new Joint Centre will build on the current research project at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Centre for History and Economics, which is supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, “Exchanges of Economic and Political Ideas since 1760.” The new Centre will be administered from both sides of the Atlantic. Its overall direction will be determined by a joint management committee, with executive committees in Cambridge, England and Cambridge, Mass. Emma Rothschild and Gareth Stedman Jones will be co-directors of the Centre in Cambridge, and Emma Rothschild will be the initial director of the Center in Harvard. The Joint Centre represents an opportunity to explore the connections between the two academic disciplines. It will make it possible for two world renowned research institutions to engage in a stimulating and productive relationship, and will provide a location for research students and leading scholars in the field to participate in a rigorous dialogue.  It is one of the exciting new developments in Cambridge which attempts to connect scholarship in different disciplines and on different regions, and to bridge the divide between serious scholarly work in the humanities and social sciences and issues of contemporary concern.
