Principal Researcher:
The project Documenting Environmental Change is
run by Paul Warde. Click on his name to see his personal web-pages and research, and on the project
title for the paper that introduces his work. He is also Book Review
editor for the On-line information service H-Environment.
In recent years the projects has also hosted or collaborated with a number of researchers in the field of environmental history.
In 2005-6, the Centre was visited by Poul Holm, President of the European Society for Environmental History and a leader in the History of Marine Animap Population project. Unfortunately for us, his stay in Cambridge was cut short by his appointmet to the rectorship of Roskilde University in Denmark . His research is in the fields of marine environmental and maritime social and economic history from medieval to modern times, and he remains on of the most active promoters of environmental history in Europe.
In 2005-6, Sverker Sörlin, Professor of Environmental History at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, was resident for a year as a visitor to the Centre got History and Economics and Pembroke College. Along with Paul Warde he ran the ‘Uses of Environmental History’ project, culminating in a conference held in Cambridge in January 2006. A co-edited volume on this theme will be forthcoming in 2007.
A co-authored article arising from the project, ‘The problem of the problem of environmental history’, will appear in the January 2007 issue of Environmental History.
Nina Kristine Brandt of the University of Copenhagen was visiting in the year 2004-5. She has completed her PhD on ‘The History of the Organic Farming Movement in Denmark; from the grassroots of the 1970s to the professionals of the 1990s.’
Ed Russell, Professor of Science, Technology, Society and History at the University of Virginia, spent a year with us 2001-2. This research has borne fruit with the co-edited volume ‘Natural Enemy, Natural Ally: Toward An Environmental History of War’; and the article ‘Evolutionary History: Prospectus for a New Field’, that appeared in Environmental History, April 2003, and won the 2004 Leopold-Hidy Prize for the best article in Environmental History.
